Treat Your Dry Eyes to a Day at the Spa

Relaxation and rejuvenation: wouldn’t it be nice if you could get that kind of comfort for your dry eyes? At Valley Family Optometry, we’ve worked hard to create a calming environment where we can offer treatment for dry eye syndrome that feels like a day at the spa.

Dry eye syndrome occurs when your eyes do not produce enough tears to keep them lubricated, or they produce poor-quality tears. Dry eyes can be caused by aging, hormones, medications, or environmental conditions.

Symptoms of Dry Eye

Common signs and symptoms of dry eye include gritty, dry feeling eyes that may itch or sting. It may cause significant discomfort or the lingering feeling of something in your eye. Your eyes may produce fewer tears or they may feel watery as they are overcompensating in response. Your vision may also become blurry or hazy.

Dry Eye Diagnosis

Valley Family Optometry uses tried-and-true technology to diagnose your dry eye accurately.

The meibomian glands play a large part in producing high-quality tears to keep the eyes lubricated, so meibography allows us to examine your glands. Meibography is an imaging technology that will enable us to determine whether or not your meibomian glands are producing adequate meibum for your eyes.

Osmolarity refers to the quality of your tears or, more specifically, a measure of solid particles in a solution. We will use a tear film analysis to test the osmolarity of your tears.

If your tear film is dysfunctional, it may lead you to develop dry eye symptoms. A healthy tear film lubricates your eyes, leaving a smooth surface on the cornea. Performing a tear film analysis allows us to see the characteristics of your tear film and if they are contributing to your dry eyes.

If you are interested in our dry eye clinic or have any questions, please do not hesitate to book an appointment to see how we can help.

Dry Eye Treatments

We employ many different treatments at our dry eye clinic. During a comprehensive exam, we will thoroughly assess your eyes so we can provide the best treatment plan for your unique situation.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) targets and selectively treats any abnormal blood vessels around the eye that may be causing inflammation. We have invested in the Lumenis Optima™ to reduce the inflammation along the eyelid margin and help liquefy any blockages in the meibomian glands.

Radio frequency has been used in aesthetics to reduce fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes for years—did you know it also helps fight dry eye symptoms? The uniform heat applied to the eyes helps remove blockages in the meibomian glands, allowing your tears to return to their proper balance.

iLux® is an in-office treatment that uses an LED-based heat source to warm the eyelids. This helps to melt any trapped oils inside the meibomian glands. Once sufficient heat has been applied, your eye doctor will apply compression to the lids to express the clogged glands.

The Zocular Eyelid System Treatment (ZEST) is a gentle in-office treatment to help provide relief of dry eye. The treatment involves gentle okra-based wipes and cleansers to wipe away bacteria and cater to the intrinsic needs of your eyes.

BlephEx is a painless, in-office treatment that spins a soft, medical-grade sponge along the edge of your eyelids and lashes. It cleans away bacteria, stimulating healthy tear production and leaving you with cleaner, healthier eyelids.

The procedure is quick and relatively painless, with most patients reporting only a tickling sensation during the treatment.
